Kanzashi are traditional hair accessories suited with kimono and yukata fashion for women. Kanzashi are mainly worn by professional kimono-clad female such as geisha, geiko, maiko, buyo-dancer, or worn at special ceremonies such as shichigosan, newyear, tea ceremony, ikebana ceremony and costumeplay.

Recently many young Japanese women wear kanzashi hair accessories to add an elegant taste to their casual fashion. There are many varieties and many styles of wearing them.

Kanzashi hair accessories are fabricated from a wide range of materials such as lacquered wood, gold and silver plated metal, tortoiseshell and silk, and recently, plastic. In fact, early bakelite kanzashi are extremely collectible.
